We're Back! Bigger and Better

After injury which has sidelined us for a while and the building of a business which grew much quicker than we originally anticipated we are pleased to announce that we are back on board with Over A Cuppa.

Do you know a cafe, take away store or restaurant that you think deserves recognition for their coffee? We want to hear about it.

We will endeavour to send one of our reviewers from our magazine Rattling Reviews to check it out and report on their findings. Do you have photo's and a written review you would like to submit? Over the past few months a new business venture has been taking up a lot of my time so Over A Cuppa has not been getting the attention that it deserves. February this year my daughter Samantha and myself started publishing Good Gabble Newzine, which is distributed monthly and focuses on all things positive. You can learn more about this at http://goodgabble.blogspot.com

We are currently travelling this vast land we call Australia promoting Good Gabble, meeting our readers and reporting on all things positive. Whilst we do this I will be taking the opportunity to drink as much coffee as possible in as many cafe's as possible and reporting on where you can find the best coffee. Here I will post photo's and stories of our cuppa experiences. This will be done town by town so check back regularly to find out where we are and if we have visited a town near you.

Whilst searching google for songs relating to the humble cuppa I came across the song A Proppa Cuppa Coffee. It has been sung by a few people over the years but I particularly love this version I found on Youtube done by Rolf Harris. I think this is my new theme song......

Protagonist Papel

58 billion paper cups are thrown into our landfill each year but this is about to change with the help of a cute and lovable paper cup called Papel.

Papel’s creator Brynn Evans has designed this quirky little comic character in conjunction with Betacup U.S.A. in the hope of changing our relationship with the humble cuppa. When asked how the idea of Papel paper cup came along Brynn stated that firstly she was flattered that anyone should be so interested in Papel.

“The idea of Papel came along when I realised I needed to make the issue of paper cups and landfill accessible to people,” she said “ You buy coffee but you very rarely think of it from the cups perspective”

In his comic, which can be found on Brynn’s blog (http://brynnevans.com/ ), Papel leaves the warehouse where he is brought up, finds himself in a coffee shop, brought by a consumer, drank from and then tossed into landfill. When it was suggested to Brynn that Papel was a lovable character that children would adore she could be seen blushing, stating she had never thought about it.

“But thinking about it children are the future of all our environmental issues” she said “It is so important that our kids know how to react and respond accordingly”

So what are the goals for Papel? Further comics, video’s, screensavers, dolls maybe?

“I haven’t really thought much about it” says Brynn “Like I said Papel was just an idea that came about. Maybe there is room for Raquel, Papel’s cousin. There is plenty of room for more comics. I visualise something to do with the decisions people make. A situation similar to ground hog day where one repeats a day where they leave there reusable cup at home and find themselves getting Papel for convenience”

Brynn Evans, a PhD student, digital anthropologist, design research consultant and writer, volunteers as a user experience consultant and researcher for the betacup initiative. Their goal is to redesign the reusable coffee mug to better align with people's coffee drinking practices. Betacup are involving the community in its initiative to help the environment by asking people to share their relationship with the cuppa. They are also holding a two fold competition - idea and design, prototype construction - to encourage communities to help solve the landfill issue by designing a reusable coffee cup. This is currently a US initiative with Betacup seeking relationships with Australian manufacturers of the disposable cups. Anyone in the world can help fund this initiative by donating anything from $2 upwards which will be used as prize money. So for Papel and his mates it is back to the shelf where they hope to live a long prosperous life as they watch the reusable cup visit time and time again.

Beta cup America leading us to a Beta environment

Whilst searching on google for inspiration for Over A Cuppa I came across the site of Betacup in America. Betacup are the leading company who process the take away cups that cafe's use for their cuppa's. Their title 'drink substainably' had me reading on in awe of their studies done on landfill and the disposable coffee cup. Betacup has shown initiative and has set a goal of producing a refillable take away cup that meets the needs of society, encourages people to use it and thus in the long run saves our environment. Click on the title of this post and check out what they are up to. It is sure to have you thinking differently about the way you purchase your cuppa when on the go.

Betacup found: we use 4 million cups per day just on airlines, which of course do not get reused or recycled. We also use 40 million cups a day just for hot beverages.

For a company who makes profits each year out of the product that is filling our land this is a brave initiative that they should be proud of. Let's hope all manufacturers of reusable cups worldwide listen and take on the challenge.

This is one example of how the humble cuppa influences society in not only the negative but in changes for the positive.

Swap a satchel of coffee with someone worldwide and make a new friend. Swap with as many or as few people as you like.

Blog on the discussion page and share your experiences with coffee. Let us know all about your swap. What sort of coffee did you receive? Was it different to what you are use to? Where did it originate from? How many times have you swapped?

Why is this blog spot here?

This blog spot has been started as a basis for the book I am compiling. A book of stories telling of events that have happened over a cuppa. Stories of the cuppa and it's influence on society.

   It is through this blog spot that I hope others worldwide will make contact with me and share their story allowing me to include it in the book. It can be funny, series, scary or just plain weird. As long as it happened over a cuppa I would love to hear it.

   Do you write poetry or have a favourite poem that involves or mentions a cuppa? I would love to hear about it and be given the opportunity to include it in my book.

This is a book to celebrate the cuppa, it's importance within society and the joy it brings.
